Climate Change Threatens UK Food Supplies and Prices

A study by Christian Aid has identified that staples such as bananas, grapes, avocados, coffee, and tea could face severe climate impacts, potentially leading to rising prices and shortages in the UK. Researchers examined household food consumption patterns in the UK, Italy, and Germany and found that a significant portion of fruits, vegetables, pulses, and meat products, approximately 22%, 23%, and 15% respectively, originate from countries with high vulnerability to climate change and low readiness to tackle it.

Extreme weather events linked to climate change, such as droughts and storms, are increasingly disrupting global food supply chains. This comes as the UK government’s adaptation plan highlighted the threat of climate change to national security and food supplies. Experts emphasize the need for action, both in reducing emissions and supporting vulnerable communities in adapting to climate impacts.
