CJI-Led Bench to Hear Petitions Against Waqf Amendment Act Today

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) will lead a Supreme Court bench today to hear several petitions that challenge the Waqf Amendment Act. Many individuals and groups have filed these petitions, claiming that the law unfairly takes away property rights and affects non-Muslim communities as well.

The petitioners argue that the amended law gives too much power to Waqf Boards. They believe that the law allows these boards to take control of land and property without giving affected people a fair chance to respond. Some petitioners also claim that the Act violates the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

The Supreme Court has received these complaints from across the country. As a result, the CJI-led bench has taken up the matter for an urgent hearing. The court will listen to the arguments from both sides before deciding whether to continue or stop the law’s implementation.

Lawyers representing the petitioners will present their case and ask the court to declare parts of the Waqf Amendment Act unconstitutional. They will argue that the law allows Waqf Boards to list properties as Waqf land without proper investigation or public notice. This, they say, harms the rights of landowners and causes legal confusion.

On the other side, the government is expected to defend the Act. It may argue that the law protects Muslim religious properties and helps manage Waqf assets more efficiently. The government will also try to prove that the law follows the Constitution and does not harm anyone’s rights.

The hearing has drawn attention from both legal experts and the public. Many people are waiting to see how the court handles this sensitive issue. Religious organizations, landowners, and legal scholars have shown interest in the case, as it could set a major precedent for future property and religious rights cases.

The Supreme Court’s decision could have a wide impact across India. Today’s hearing is an important step toward finding clarity on how the Waqf Amendment Act affects people’s rights and legal protections.
