China Faces Global Scrutiny in U.N. Human Rights Review

China is under international scrutiny as more than 160 countries, including both critics and allies, participate in the latest United Nations-backed review of its human rights record. Each participating country will have only 45 seconds to speak during the discussion. The universal periodic review occurs roughly every five years, allowing member states to offer constructive criticism and recommendations.

Human rights groups and advocates for Tibet, Hong Kong, and Uyghurs plan events to address their concerns during the review. China’s treatment of Jimmy Lai, a former Hong Kong publisher, is expected to be a topic of discussion, with calls for his release and the repeal of Hong Kong’s national security law.
