Chennai’s Third Master Plan Workshop Addresses Urban Growth and Traffic Issues

In an effort to shape the Third Master Plan (2027-2046) for the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA), which spans 1,189 square kilometers, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) initiated preparations with a multi-sector workshop on October 18. This initiative is part of the Tamil Nadu Housing and Habitat Development Project, supported by the World Bank.

Prior to the workshop, the CMDA conducted zonal-level public consultations across the CMA and collected a substantial 40,362 responses through various platforms. The CMDA’s approach included engaging with stakeholder departments throughout the CMA to align the Third Master Plan’s goals with the expectations of the city over the next two decades.

The workshop specifically focused on the ‘Urban Growth and Housing’ and ‘Traffic and Transportation’ sectors, with participation from technical experts and key figures in the field. Visioning exercises, sector-wise presentations, and open discussions were conducted with the aim of identifying sector-specific challenges and promoting cross-sector collaboration to establish clear objectives and priorities.
