Chennai’s Initiative to Mitigate Man-Animal Conflicts Through Licensing
To address the increasing incidents of man-animal conflicts, Chennai’s Mayor R. Priya has emphasized the need for a robust animal licensing system. This follows recent events, including a buffalo attack in Tiruvottiyur and other cattle-related incidents. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to establish cattle pounds for different city regions and impose stringent fines on repeat offenders who allow their cattle to roam freely.
The initiative also includes a stray dog census and intensified sterilization and vaccination drives. Licensing requirements will ensure that cattle owners maintain adequate space for their animals and adhere to new regulations. The GCC has already impounded 1,117 cattle this year, imposing fines totaling ₹43.05 lakh. These measures, discussed at the upcoming Standing Committee (Public Health) meeting, aim to enhance public safety and manage urban animal populations more effectively.
