Chennai to Get Waste-to-Energy Plant Under Public-Private Partnership

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has approved the establishment of an integrated waste processing facility for processing wet waste and refuse-derived fuel generated from material recovery facilities at Kodungaiyur and Perungudi. This initiative aims to construct a waste-to-energy plant in Chennai through a public-private partnership (PPP).

The GCC will also establish a bio CNG plant and a composting unit as part of this project. Private entities involved in the project are expected to generate substantial revenue, with estimates of ₹2,484 crore from the sale of electricity for 20 years, ₹1,886 crore from the sale of recyclables, ₹764 crore from CNG sales, and ₹529 crore from compost sales, totaling ₹5,705 crore over 20 years. The project’s estimated expenditure during this period is ₹5,045 crore.
