After enduring a hot day, Chennai and its surrounding areas experienced intense thunderstorms on the night of June 17, 2024, bringing much-needed relief from the heat. The downpour, which led to waterlogging in several parts of the city, saw Sholinganallur receiving 12 cm of rain, and Poonamallee recording 11 cm. Other areas in the southern city, such as Chembarambakkam and Pallikaranai, also reported substantial rainfall.
The Regional Meteorological Centre predicts that the wet weather will persist until June 23, driven by weather systems and convective activity. The heavy rains have already pushed Meenambakkam’s June rainfall to 20.7 cm, well above the average. More thunderstorms are expected in parts of North Tamil Nadu and Chennai, continuing the trend of evening and late-night showers.
