In the aftermath of the devastating floods that struck Chennai in December 2023, the Tamil Nadu Highways Department has embarked on a mission to rehabilitate the city’s damaged roads. With a budget of ₹20 crore allocated for 28 projects, including major thoroughfares like Velachery-Tambaram Road and Tambaram-Mudichur Road, efforts are underway to address the extensive road damage caused by the floods. Despite initial emergency repairs, the magnitude of the destruction necessitates more comprehensive and lasting solutions.
Nighttime repair work is planned for sections of the southern sector of Inner Ring Road to minimize disruption to traffic flow. However, challenges persist, as residents like V. Kala highlight issues of coordination among government agencies and the recurring disruption caused by infrastructure projects. Nevertheless, with significant funds allocated by the state government for temporary road work across Tamil Nadu, there is hope for the gradual restoration of Chennai’s vital transportation network.
