The Tamil Nadu Private Water Lorry Owners Association has decided to cancel the indefinite strike that had been proposed earlier by private water tanker operators in Chennai.
The strike was intended to demand the renewal of licenses to extract groundwater for supply. Following discussions with Tambaram revenue officials, the Association’s president, N. Nijalingam, stated that officials have assured them of measures to renew their licenses and facilitate the supply of water in the city and its surroundings.
Around 15,000 private tankers have resumed their daily operations after the talks, with each lorry conducting an average of two to four trips per day. The Association plans to further discuss licensing for borewells and tankers for groundwater extraction with Tiruvallur Collector and Chennai Metrowater officials. The unresolved issue of licenses for private tankers and the need to streamline operations and identify borewells remains a concern.
