Chennai Metrowater is set to conduct a random survey of buildings in the city, with a particular focus on multi-storeyed structures, to assess the maintenance of rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems. Collaborating with non-governmental organizations in various zones, the survey aims to ensure the proper upkeep of RWH structures.
This initiative follows last year’s door-to-door survey conducted by volunteers of the Tamil Nadu Urban Livelihoods Mission, which identified that 18% of the 10.27 lakh buildings surveyed had poorly maintained RWH systems. Notices are planned to be issued this year to those who have not implemented or maintained RWH structures. The survey aligns with the city’s increased groundwater levels, with a recent average water table depth of 4.4 meters below ground level, indicating the benefits of a good southwest monsoon.
However, a few zones, including Tiruvottiyur, Madhavaram, and Ambattur, have seen a marginal dip in water table levels, possibly due to increased groundwater extraction in areas yet to receive full piped water supply coverage. Chennai Metrowater also intends to raise awareness about rainwater harvesting through street plays, stickers on water tankers, and informative banners at public venues, while also providing a dedicated RWH helpline for residents.
