Chennai Metrowater Explores Supplying Treated Wastewater to Alleviate Industrial Demand
Chennai Metrowater is investigating the feasibility of supplying treated wastewater from the Perungudi TTUF (Tertiary Treatment using Ultrafiltration) plant to industries in Chengalpattu district. With a daily capacity of 10 million litres, the Perungudi plant could address the demands raised by 10-15 industries during a recent global investors meet in the city.
The proposed pipeline, spanning approximately 40 km, aims to meet additional demands for 20 million litres per day of treated wastewater from industries in the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam belt. Currently, Chennai Metrowater supplies about 23 million litres per day of secondary treated sewage from the Kodungaiyur plant to industries in the Manali, Minjur, and Ennore belts.
This initiative aligns with the water agency’s efforts to reduce freshwater demand from industries by utilizing treated wastewater for industrial purposes, mitigating stress on freshwater sources in the region.
