Chennai Metro Rail Study Reveals Majority of Riders are Working Professionals and Students

A recent study conducted by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has unveiled that around 80% of commuters utilizing the Metro Rail system are comprised of working professionals and students. The study, which gathered data from nearly 33,000 samples across 41 stations, highlighted that government and private sector employees constitute about half of the total commuters, while students make up approximately 30%.

CMRL conducted this analysis to gain insights into commuter profiles, enabling them to tailor initiatives and address gaps in the system. The Chennai Metro Rail system covers over 54 km, connecting various key locations in the city, and has witnessed a 25% increase in ridership over the past seven months.
