Chennai Metro Rail Proposes Expansion to Second Airport Site

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has submitted a comprehensive proposal to the State government, outlining plans for a mass rapid transit system extension from Poonamallee to Parandur, encompassing Thirumazhisai and Sriperumbudur. The proposed corridor is slated to cover a total length of 43.63 km, with 19 stations, and an estimated cost of ₹10,712 crore. Currently, CMRL’s Phase II project includes a station at Poonamallee, set to be operational in the next two years.

The extension from Poonamallee to Parandur aims to enhance connectivity and facilitate quicker commuting between the city and Kancheepuram. Key stations on this stretch include Nazarathpet, Thirumazhisai, Sriperumbudur, SIPCOT, and Parandur airport. If approved, the fully elevated stretch is expected to provide swift transportation, addressing the growing traffic concerns in the city.
