Chennai Metro Rail Initiates Flyover Demolition for Underground Station Construction

Chennai Metro Rail has commenced the demolition of a section of the flyover at the Royapettah High Road-Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai junction as part of the Phase II project. The demolition aims to make space for the construction of the Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai underground station, which is part of corridor 3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Mylapore) of the 116 km project.

The underground station’s depth is estimated to be about 15-18 meters, and it will feature two entry/exit points for commuters. While the flyover demolition is expected to conclude in one or two months, traffic diversions will continue until the station construction is completed, a process anticipated to take approximately three years. The reconstruction of the flyover will follow, and the entire project is being executed with precautionary measures to ensure safety.
