Chennai Metro Rail Expansion Receives Green Light from NITI Aayog

The Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase I project has received approval from NITI Aayog to procure 28 additional trains, addressing the increasing passenger congestion. With nearly 2.7 lakh daily commuters, the new trains aim to improve service frequency across the 54-km network.

Following this nod, the proposal will advance to the Department of Economic Affairs and the Department of Finance for further recommendations, enabling loan assistance from international banks. The project, costing ₹2,820 crore, includes upgrading station facilities and is expected to take about two years for the new trains to become operational.
