Following a bout of heavy rainfall on November 3, parts of Chennai faced severe waterlogging, with Five Furlong Road in Guindy and various areas in Velachery being particularly affected. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) reported that the unauthorized pumping of water from the Race Course premises into storm-water drains exacerbated the situation.
Despite the downpour lasting for nearly three hours, diligent efforts by the GCC, including the use of motorized pumps, helped clear the waterlogged areas by noon. Residents expressed their concerns about the perennial issue, with some highlighting the impact on school students, whose daily commutes were disrupted by traffic snarls and vehicle damage risks.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), intermittent moderate rain and intense thundershowers are expected in Chennai over the next twenty-four hours. The GCC’s data revealed a history of water stagnation in various spots over the past few years, emphasizing the ongoing challenge of managing waterlogging in the city.
