The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to enhance its waste collection efforts by replacing 600 tricycles with 350 new battery-operated vehicles (BOVs). Funded under the Kalaignar Centenary Celebrations, this initiative aims to improve efficiency and dignity for conservancy workers, especially women. Each BOV can carry up to 500 kg, tripling the capacity of the tricycles. With over 2,000 BOVs already in use, this addition will further streamline operations.
However, concerns about maintenance persist, as many GCC BOVs face operational issues within a year, unlike the well-maintained vehicles of private operators. The GCC is urged to improve maintenance standards and ensure adequate compensation for injured workers.
