Chennai Corporation Urges Responsible Disposal of Firecracker Waste

With Deepavali festivities approaching, the Greater Chennai Corporation is urging residents to responsibly dispose of firecracker waste. Last year, the city collected around 235 tonnes of cracker waste, highlighting the importance of mindful waste management during the festive season.

In a meeting chaired by Mayor R. Priya on November 8, officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation, Urbesar Sumeeth Company, and Chennai Enviro Solutions Private Limited discussed strategies for effective waste management during celebrations.

Corporation Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan emphasized the need for residents to segregate firecracker waste and hand it over to conservancy workers during regular waste collection. The waste will then be sent to the incineration facility instead of dumping grounds.

The Corporation manages 6,150 tonnes of solid waste daily from all 15 zones and has a comprehensive plan in place to collect and transport cracker waste separately to the Resustainability IWM Solutions Limited facility in Gummidipoondi, according to data from the civic body.
