Chennai Corporation to Explore Non-Surgical Sterilization Trials for Stray Dogs

The Greater Chennai Corporation is set to collaborate with experts from the University of Georgia, USA, to conduct non-surgical sterilization trials on stray dogs in the city. Corporation Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan discussed the experimental study with Mohan Kumar and Sheeba Mohan Kumar, involving a nanoparticles-based intervention.

This non-invasive methodology aims to control the stray dog population without surgical procedures. The University’s patented study, still in the experimental stage, awaits regulatory approvals from the US Food and Drug Administration and India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization. The trial, planned in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, will involve injecting stray dogs, requiring sheltering for three to four weeks.

The process is expected to conclude by July 2024, including clinical trials.
