Chennai Corporation to Enhance Stray Cattle Control Efforts

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to increase the number of pounds for stray cattle and intensify efforts to remove cattle from the streets of the city. This decision comes after a recent incident in which a girl was injured by a cow in the Arumbakkam area.

The GCC has registered an FIR against the owner of the cow in question and aims to prevent such incidents by taking action against individuals without proper cattle shelters. The Corporation’s Commissioner, J. Radhakrishnan, stated that raids will be intensified using vehicles capable of catching up to 60 cows a day. The number of pounds will also be increased from two to at least five, and coordination with NGOs and goshalas outside the city will be established to care for abandoned cattle.

The Commissioner emphasized that proper space for cattle rearing is necessary to prevent such incidents and accidents caused by roaming cattle. Former AIADMK floor leader of the Corporation Council, V. Sukumar Babu, pointed out the need to address rule violations in cow rearing that lead to road accidents.
