Chennai Corporation to Audit and Remove Unsafe Hoardings
In response to safety concerns, the Greater Chennai Corporation will conduct a zonal audit of the structural stability of hoardings, billboards, and banners, Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan announced. Prompted by a deadly accident in Mumbai, the Corporation has intensified efforts to dismantle illegal and unsafe structures, removing 514 hoardings since March 1.
Structural engineers will oversee the audit, especially for those near public areas. Licensing procedures under the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 2023, require stability certificates and compliance with safety regulations. A special drive to identify recurring illegal hoarding hotspots is planned post-Lok Sabha elections.
