Chennai Corporation Nears Property Tax Collection Target of ₹700 Crore Ahead of Deadline
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is on track to meet its property tax collection target of ₹700 crore ahead of the September 30 deadline. In the first half-year since the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act came into effect, the GCC has collected ₹680.58 crore from approximately 7 lakh property tax assesses, marking an increase of ₹91 crore compared to the same period last year when ₹589 crore was collected.
The tax collection rate increased to ₹4 crore per day in the final days before the deadline, and it is expected to cross ₹40 crore on the last day of September. Starting October 1, the GCC will send QR codes to residents’ WhatsApp numbers to facilitate property tax payments across the city’s 15 zones. The new Act also introduces penalties for late payments and incentives for early payments to encourage compliance.
