Chennai Corporation Completes Relaying of 5,000 Roads Ahead of Northeast Monsoon

Chennai Corporation has successfully relaid 5,000 roads in the first phase in preparation for the Northeast monsoon, as stated by Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister K.N. Nehru. Responding to concerns raised by numerous motorists about poor road conditions in various zones, the state government allocated Rs. 2,000 crore for the restoration of roads and infrastructure in the city, as per Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s directive.

Many of the roads damaged during infrastructure projects have been repaired to alleviate difficulties for drivers. In anticipation of the monsoon, relief centers have been established across Chennai to accommodate residents, and equipment for clearing uprooted trees has been prepared. Over 700 pumps are stationed throughout the city to manage rainwater, and extensive desilting of canals has been carried out to prevent flooding.

The Chennai Corporation has procured 51 bobcat skid steer loaders at a cost of approximately Rs. 12.75 crore to improve waste management and disaster response in narrow streets during floods, with funding from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). Additionally, the CMDA has allocated an estimated Rs. 30.30 crore for the modernization of the Madhavaram Truck Terminal and bus stand by the Chennai Corporation.
