The Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated a comprehensive desilting operation for its 2,624 km network of stormwater drains, with over 72% currently clogged with silt. Starting well ahead of the northeast monsoon, the goal is to clear 1,900 km of drains by September 30 to ensure efficient water flow. The project, with a budget of ₹50 lakh per zone, involves tenders already finalized and work orders issued to contractors.
Additionally, major construction projects funded by international banks aim to further enhance the stormwater drainage infrastructure by 2024, addressing chronic inundation issues and improving the city’s flood resilience.
