The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to implement advanced flood mitigation measures with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Following a recent meeting in Japan, officials from the GCC, Water Resources Department, and State Revenue and Disaster Management Department discussed strategies like underground tunnels, siphon pipes, and storage facilities using stadiums.
These methods aim to enhance water storage during summers and reduce flooding by increasing the retention capacity of urban river basins. Focused on areas around the Adyar, Cooum, and Buckingham Canal, the initiatives will be tailored to Chennai’s terrain and executed post a detailed analysis, significantly improving the city’s resilience to floods.
