Challenges and Solutions in Managing Chennai’s C&D Waste

The Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) efforts to manage construction and demolition (C&D) waste through designated dumping sites face significant challenges. While fines are imposed for illegal dumping, enforcement remains inconsistent, and residents question its effectiveness. Despite establishing designated dumping spots in each zone, work remains incomplete in several areas. Current facilities only address unauthorized debris on public roads, neglecting waste from individual homes and commercial establishments.

Lessons from cities like Hyderabad suggest that door-to-door collection, supported by appropriate fees and public awareness, could mitigate the problem. Moreover, scientific processing and recycling of C&D waste can help reduce environmental impact and support sustainable construction practices. However, transportation costs, local body permissions, and the creation of a market for recycled products remain critical bottlenecks that need to be addressed.
