Centre Establishes Panel for Queer Community Welfare
The Ministry of Law and Justice has constituted a six-member committee, led by the Cabinet Secretary, to address the concerns of the queer community and ensure equitable access to services and welfare schemes. This initiative follows the Supreme Court’s directive last October, emphasizing the need to mitigate challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals. Comprising key officials from various ministries, the committee aims to devise strategies to prevent discrimination and violence against the queer community.
The terms of reference underscore the importance of safeguarding queer individuals from involuntary medical treatments and surgeries while prioritizing mental health support. Although the committee’s mandate does not explicitly address recognition of queer partnerships, it retains the flexibility to address pertinent issues as deemed necessary. The announcement coincides with the recent unveiling of the Congress manifesto, which pledges legislative measures to acknowledge civil unions among queer individuals. This proactive step signals a concerted effort by the government to uphold the rights and dignity of LGBTQ individuals in India.
