Canadian Commission Investigates Possible Indian Interference in Elections
An independent commission in Canada, tasked with investigating foreign interference in Canadian affairs, has requested information from the Trudeau government regarding possible meddling in elections by India. The commission was established in response to reports of alleged Chinese attempts to influence Canadian elections.
The request specifically seeks documents related to India’s alleged interference in the 2019 and 2021 elections. Led by Quebec Judge Marie-Josee Hogue, the commission will assess the federal government’s capacity to detect, deter, and counter foreign interference.
This development has the potential to strain diplomatic relations between Canada and India, which have already faced tensions over allegations linking Indian agents to the murder of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
