Call for Improved Amenities at Koyambedu Wholesale Market
The Federation of All Associations of the KWMC Periyar Market, representing wholesale merchants at the Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai, is advocating for enhanced amenities in the complex. Despite being a vital hub for perishable goods for nearly three decades, the 300-acre market still grapples with inadequate drinking water supply, with none of the shops having water connections.
The federation highlights the necessity for safe drinking water for approximately 10,000 laborers, urging authorities to address this longstanding issue. Other demands include the reopening of a closed clinic, the establishment of a hospital for market laborers, and the formation of a committee to address encroachments and regulate traffic.
With the recent relocation of the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, the federation suggests utilizing the space for market development and creating parking lots for visiting vehicles. Furthermore, the federation calls for restrictions on sales outside warehouses and the regulation of the number of trucks to address the growing presence of godowns for perishable goods around the market. Their demands have been formally submitted to the Market Management Committee for consideration.
