Breakthrough in Marine Fisheries: ICAR-CMFRI Identifies Two New Seer Fish Species

Researchers at the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) have achieved a breakthrough in the marine fisheries sector by identifying two additional species of seer fish, highly valued in the market. The Arabian sparrow seer fish (Scomberomorus avirostrus) is an entirely new discovery, while the Russel’s spotted seer fish (Scomberomorus leopardus) has been resurrected from being considered a synonym of the spotted seer fish.

The study, led by Dr E M Abdussamad, revealed that the spotted seer fish is a complex of three distinct species. These findings contribute to marine biodiversity understanding and hold potential for the country’s marine fisheries sector.
