Boundary Demarcation Underway for Restoration of Chennai’s Buckingham Canal

Chennai’s Water Resources Department is currently working on demarcating the boundaries of various stretches of Buckingham Canal as part of a preliminary measure for a comprehensive restoration project aimed at sustainable flood management. The 47.5-kilometer-long canal is set to be expanded to accommodate additional floodwater flow in its first phase.

Around 40% of the boundary demarcation work has already been completed, particularly in the northern and southern segments up to Marakkanam. However, the central sections are posing challenges due to resistance from residents. In addition to restoring its original width, the canal will see the construction of flood protection walls and straight-cut channels will be built to drain urban floodwater directly into the sea.

The ultimate goal is a comprehensive improvement project to enhance flood management and preserve the canal’s ecological value, requiring potential funding partnerships with international agencies.
