BJP Counters Tamil Nadu CM’s Remarks on Democracy

Following Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s criticism of the Delhi Service Bill as a dark day for democracy, state BJP president K. Annamalai countered by asserting that the real dark days were during Congress rule, highlighting the 90 instances of state government dismissal under Article 356.

Annamalai cited former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s history of dismissing elected state governments 50 times, labeling those periods as detrimental to democracy. He emphasized that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had clarified the Delhi Services Bill’s purpose in Parliament, asserting it doesn’t undermine democracy like the actions of the Congress during their rule.

Annamalai recalled the 1975 emergency declaration by Indira Gandhi and criticized former Chief Minister Karunanidhi for welcoming her to Tamil Nadu, alluding to historical context. He also stated that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin seemed to confuse Delhi’s status as a Union Territory with limited powers.
