Bangladesh is confronting a severe dengue outbreak, with over 500 deaths recorded this year due to the mosquito-borne disease, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). In the 24 hours at least 13 more dengue-related deaths were reported along with 2,070 new hospitalizations for dengue patients.
This year’s outbreak has resulted in 106,429 infections, making it the deadliest year for dengue in Bangladesh since the first recorded epidemic in 2000. The month of August alone saw 54,597 new dengue cases, following 43,854 cases recorded in July. The DGHS data also indicates that 98,098 patients have been discharged from hospitals across the country this year.
