The killing of two CRPF personnel in Manipur, according to officials, aimed to draw attention to the need for a political solution in the state. The attackers targeted the camp at Naranseina in Bishnupur district, assuming the personnel to be Meitei members of the State police. This incident underscores the urgency of finding a political resolution to the ongoing violence. Since the outbreak of ethnic violence between the tribal Kuki-Zo and the Meitei communities in May 2023, over 200 people have lost their lives.
The withdrawal of Central security forces, around 5,000 personnel, in the first week of April has created a security vacuum, further escalating tensions. The attack is seen as an attempt to bring the Central government’s attention to the demands for a separate administration by the Kuki-Zo community. Investigations are underway, and the culprits are expected to be apprehended soon, according to Kuldiep Singh, the Security Adviser to the Manipur government.
