Assam Police Intercept Speeding Car with 594kg Cannabis at State Boundary Checkpoint
Assam Police thwarted an attempt to smuggle contraband as a speeding car tried to evade the checkpoint at the state boundary with Tripura. The incident occurred at the Churaibari checkpoint, where police were inspecting vehicles moving from Tripura towards Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday night. The car lost control and overturned while attempting to hastily cross the interstate border.
Authorities seized a significant amount of 594 kg of cannabis from the vehicle. Despite the seizure, no arrests were made as the smugglers managed to escape, according to police sources. Superintendent of Police in Karimganj, Partha Pratim Das, noted that smugglers have adopted new tactics, such as building secret compartments in vehicles.
The police discovered and confiscated 58 packets of contraband hidden within these secret chambers. While no arrests have been made yet, the traffickers are being actively pursued for capture. Cannabis from Tripura is transported to states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra, where it fetches higher prices.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the police effort, commending their work in intercepting the vehicle and seizing the significant quantity of contraband.
