Arappor Iyakkam Exposes Alleged ₹700-Crore Loss Due to Illegal Mining

Arappor Iyakkam, led by convenor Jayaram Venkatesan, has accused illegal mining activities of causing a staggering loss of over ₹700 crore to the exchequer. Venkatesan emphasized the detrimental effects of illegal mining on the environment and the livelihoods of residents across various districts. Through the Right to Information Act, the organization claims to have unveiled corruption within the illegal mining sector, highlighting the collusion between politicians, bureaucracy, and quarry lessees.

Seeking accountability, Arappor Iyakkam has complained with the Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, urging the registration of FIRs and thorough investigations under relevant statutes. The complaint specifically targets the corruption surrounding the illegal mining of rough stone and gravel, predominantly in districts like Tirunelveli and Tiruppur.

Following a tragic accident in a stone quarry, a subsequent inspection reportedly revealed widespread illegal mining practices in the region, leading to penalties imposed by authorities. Arappor Iyakkam has obtained documentation through RTI, shedding light on the extent of illegal activities in identified quarries, as detailed in orders issued by the Cheranmadevi Sub Collector.
