Ancient Treasures Unearthed: Lead Coin Hoard in Phanigiri
In a remarkable discovery, officials of the Department of Archaeology and Museums have uncovered a coin hoard at the Phanigiri Buddhist site in Suryapet district, Telangana. Led by N. Sagar and B. Mallu, the excavation team found an earthen pot containing 3,730 lead coins adorned with an elephant symbol on one side and the Ujjain symbol on the other.
These coins, dating back to the Ikshvaku period between the 3rd and 4th centuries CE, shed light on the historical significance of the region. Alongside the coins, various artefacts including stone beads, glass beads, and pottery were also unearthed, enriching our understanding of the site’s cultural heritage.
