Ammonia Gas Leak in Ennore Raises Health Concerns: Residents Hospitalized, Fishing Community Demands Action
A significant ammonia gas leak from an underwater pipeline supplying an industrial unit near Periyakuppam in Ennore caused widespread panic and health concerns among residents on the night of December 26, 2023. Hundreds complained of difficulty in breathing and burning of eyes and faces, leading to hospitalizations.
Fishing community leaders demanded that Ennore be declared an area affected by industrial accidents, urging action against responsible companies and compensation for affected individuals. The leak occurred during the pre-cooling process, with residents in Periyakuppam, Chinnakuppam, Netaji Nagar, Burma Nagar experiencing intense odors and eye irritation.
Despite reassurances and containment efforts, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board recorded ammonia levels in the air and sea exceeding safety standards. The incident raises serious health and environmental concerns, prompting calls for immediate action and accountability.
