Amit Shah Announces Implementation of New Criminal Laws

Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared the implementation of three new criminal laws—The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—replacing India’s longstanding IPC, CrPC, and IEA. Shah clarified that crimes committed on or after July 1, 2024, would be tried under the new laws, while those before this date would adhere to the old legal frameworks.

Emphasizing technological readiness, Shah mentioned a gradual implementation plan across police stations, noting challenges and the need for preparedness, especially for the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. He also highlighted forthcoming discussions on extending legal provisions to include sexual crimes against men, citing a recent Supreme Court ruling.
