According to the Road Transport Administration Department (RTAD), Myanmar witnessed a concerning surge in road accidents, with a total of 2,250 fatalities and 6,159 injuries reported in the first 11 months of the year.
This represents a notable decrease compared to the same period in the previous year when 5,202 accidents were recorded. Yangon Region had the highest number of road accident-related deaths during this period, with 387 reported cases, followed by Mandalay Region with 315 and Shan State with 308, according to RTAD data.
The capital, Nay Pyi Taw, experienced 94 accidents in the same timeframe, resulting in 80 fatalities and 122 injuries. The data highlights the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in Myanmar, considering the high toll on human lives and well-being caused by traffic accidents in the country. In the entirety of 2022, Myanmar recorded 2,795 fatalities and 7,853 injuries in 5,631 traffic accidents, underscoring the ongoing challenge of ensuring road safety.
