The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to investigate complaints of improper waste dumping in Ambattur Industrial Estate and Nolambur, highlighting a violation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. Allegedly, private agencies handling waste from bulk waste generators (BWGs) in these areas have been dumping unsegregated hazardous, electrical, and meat waste along with domestic garbage on the streets, posing environmental and health risks.
The GCC plans to deploy a team of officials, including an assistant executive engineer, to inspect the area promptly and address the issue. Additionally, efforts will be made to enforce compliance with waste management regulations, ensuring that service providers adhere to Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Central Pollution Control Board norms.
The situation is exacerbated by the dumping of bulk waste from neighboring zones, prompting the GCC to take decisive action against offenders. This proactive approach reflects the GCC’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness and sustainability in Chennai’s urban areas, safeguarding public health and environmental integrity.
