Addressing Chennai’s Water Needs: WRD Contemplates Krishna River Water
As Chennai braces for the impending summer season, the Water Resources Department (WRD) is considering tapping into Krishna River water to bolster the city’s water supply. This strategic move hinges on the collaboration between Chennai and Andhra Pradesh, contingent upon the water storage levels in both regions. While current reservoir levels appear adequate to sustain daily water supply until the Northeast monsoon, the WRD anticipates the need for additional storage during peak summer months.
Notably, efforts are underway to enhance the Kandaleru Poondi Canal infrastructure to prevent seepage, alongside essential repair works on reservoir shutters. By diverting water from Poondi to Red Hills reservoir and Chembarambakkam reservoir, the WRD aims to facilitate repairs while concurrently addressing water distribution needs. This proactive approach underscores the department’s commitment to optimizing water resources and ensuring sustainable water management in Chennai.
