In a significant development, Chennai Mayor R. Priya has issued transfer orders to 182 teachers from various districts in Tamil Nadu to be deployed in schools under the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). These teachers, comprising middle, graduate, and post-graduate educators, have been transferred through a counseling process.
The Greater Chennai Corporation operates 420 schools, including primary, middle, high, and higher secondary schools, with an additional 139 schools in extended areas like Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Chennai districts. This transfer initiative has brought relief to teachers who had been commuting long distances between Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram, some of whom have been traveling for over a decade.
They have praised the transparency of this transfer process compared to previous years, which they claim were mired in corruption. The transfer of 182 teachers has filled over 200 vacancies allocated for faculty from other districts in the extended areas.
