161 Taluks in Karnataka Declared Severely Drought-Hit
The Karnataka government has declared 161 taluks in the state as severely drought-hit, with an additional 34 taluks facing moderate drought conditions. Out of the 236 taluks in Karnataka, 195 are currently grappling with drought situations. This declaration will remain in effect for the next six months or until further notice.
The decision was made based on reports from district commissioners following the central government’s drought declaration guidelines. The state has been experiencing a delayed and erratic monsoon season, with rainfall shortages reaching as high as 70 percent in August, the lowest in 125 years.
Karnataka’s Minister for Revenue, Krishna Byre Gowda, noted that 195 out of 227 taluks are facing a drought-like situation, with a significant rainfall deficit in various regions, including the hilly Malnad area and Cauvery catchment areas. A crop survey will be conducted in 40 additional taluks in the coming days, and if they are found to be drought-prone, they will also be included in the list of affected areas.
