Advertising plays a vital role in today’s world. It has become a full fledged industry, though at the same time, it is a commercial art. It is the soul and life of all kinds of trade. Without it, all trade, commerce and industry would come to a standstill. It is the most economic way of selling various kind of products. It assumes importance due to the fact that there is a tough competition in every type of industry. The some product is manufactured by several companies. It is only through advertising that a company can hope to sell its product. Moreover, today’s consumer has become very choosy and is well aware of the existence of various products in the market. Only proper advertisement can allure them to buy a particular brand. In almost all the countries of the world, businesses men spend a lot of money on advertisements on TV and radio and in press. Even big film stars are roped in to advertise through small clips, artistically made. Some advertisements are aesthetically very appealing. Good artists are engaged by advertising firms to design such ads. In this materialistic world, the electronic and print media can not do without advertisements. Almost all the TV channels have now commercial breaks for advertisements. Newspapers print special supplements for advertisements. The big Shopping Malls also spend a lot of money on advertisements. No business concern can float with success without advertisement. It is only through advertisements that the producer comes in touch with the customers. New customers are created through awareness campaigns. Some agencies engaged in social work also advertise in order to make people aware of some burning social problems such as female foeticide, the spread of climatic disease, AIDS, etc. Such advertisements prove to be very useful in dealing with such problems. The government departments also issue ads in respect of employment or the start of new projects, etc. Lost and found type of ads are also very useful. In spite of some negative aspects of advertising, it can not be washed away. It has come to stay as a necessary activity. The need of the hour is, however, to regulate the advertising industry so that the customers are not cheated on false promises and tall claims.
