Highlights of Mylapore Kapaleeswarar temple
Mylapore Kapaleeswarar temple is one of the famous temples in Chennai, Tamilnadu state. The main deity is Lord Kapaleeswarar (Shivan) and goddess Karpagambal. Karpagam means boon-yielding tree. Goddess Karpagambal worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a peacock. The 10-day annual festival is celebrated in the month of March-April. You can witness a huge crowd on Adhikara Nandi, Rishabha Vaahana Chariot, and Arubathumoovar processions.
Arubathumoovar festival is celebrated lavishly. Lots of deity in all over the city were taken out and the procession of deities will happen all around Madaveedhis of Mylapore. Many roadside shops opened for selling toys, bangles, and all-over products free food distribution like Sambhar rice, biscuit, milk products, and snacks. Other festivals like Pradosham, Karthigai Deepam, Skandashashti, Aarudra Dharisanam. People flock to see the festival these days.
There are 6 other Shivan temples. The first and foremost is the Kapaleeswarar temple. Velleeswarar temple is placed closed to Kapaleeswarar temple. This year Kapaleeswarar temple’s annual Panguni festival commences from March 9, 2022, to March 18, 2022.
The cultural festival “Vidaiyatri Utsavam” will be celebrated after the end of the annual festival.
The other deities in Kapaleeswarar are Lord Narthana Vinayagar, Lord Singaravelar (Murugar), Thirugnana Sambandhar, Navagraha, Lord Annamalaiyar (Lord Shivan), Saneeswarar, and Arubathumoovar statues inside Kapaleeswarar sanctum. Recently in 2016, Kumbabishegam happened in Kapaleeswarar temple.
There are many other temples like Adhikesava Perumal temple, Shirdi Saibaba temple, Luz Navasakthi Vinayagar temple, Santhome Church, Mundaka Kanni Amman temple. The Village deity Kolavizhi Amman is placed a few half kilometers from busy bazaar street.
The temple is open from morning 6 am to 1 pm and evening 4:30 pm to 9:30 pm. There is transport to reach this temple. It is placed main part of the city. There are few buses from Chennai Central and Koyembedu bus terminus. There are few hotels to stay in and around Mylapore.
