Government of India’s ‘The Weaving Tradition’ Handloom Expo Begins in Chennai on 25th March 2025
The National Design Centre (NDC), with the support of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, is all set to organize ‘The Weaving Tradition: Special Handloom Expo,’ a celebration of India’s diverse and vibrant handloom heritage. The event will be held at the R.K. Convention Centre, East Coast Road, Neelankarai, Chennai, from 25th to 31st March 2025, bringing together master weavers and artisans from across the country to showcase their intricate craftsmanship.
The week-long expo aims to highlight the artistry of 75 master weavers, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and cooperative societies, offering a diverse collection of traditional handloom products. Visitors will be able to explore a wide range of handcrafted textiles, including silk and cotton sarees, dress materials, home furnishings, shawls, stoles, and other heritage fabrics that reflect India’s rich weaving legacy.
‘The Weaving Tradition: Special Handloom Expo’ seeks to establish direct market linkages between weavers and buyers, giving artisans a chance to connect with exporters, wholesalers, and retailers interested in sourcing authentic handloom products. The expo will also serve as a valuable platform for designers and industry stakeholders to collaborate with traditional weavers, thereby promoting innovation while preserving India’s indigenous textile techniques.
The primary goal of the expo is to provide market exposure to handloom artisans, helping them generate sustainable income while preserving traditional craftsmanship. The initiative aligns with the government’s vision of promoting ‘Vocal for Local’ and boosting the global recognition of India’s handloom heritage.
The expo is expected to draw a large number of visitors, including buyers, exporters, and craft enthusiasts eager to engage with India’s rich textile traditions. The event will also give visitors a chance to directly support the artisans who have preserved India’s intricate weaving techniques for generations.
With over 50 varieties of weaves on display, ‘The Weaving Tradition: Special Handloom Expo’ will serve as a key destination for those seeking high-quality handloom products. It promises to be a vibrant celebration of India’s culture, craftsmanship, and creativity, offering a unique opportunity to witness the timeless beauty of Indian textiles.
