Chennai, September 20th, 2021: Doctors at Rela Hospital have successfully performed the Bone marrow transplant on a Two-year-old girl from Andhra Pradesh who was diagnosed with Thalassemia, a rare and life-threatening blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce haemoglobin and red blood cells when she was 6 months old and was on regular  blood transfusion from then. The team headed by  Dr.Dheenadayalan, Senior Consultant and Clinical Lead, Clinical Haemato Oncology at Rela Hospital performed the transplantation with the bone marrow stem cells donated by Baby’s father. Post the Transplant both the baby and the father are doing well and has been discharged in clinically stable condition.

Eluri Aadya a 2-year-old resident of Talaipilkudam, Andhra Pradesh was constantly weak and extremely inactive for a baby of her age. She had a history of frequently falling ill and easy bruising on her arms and legs. Thorough blood examinations by the doctors in her native confirmed that she had Thalassemia, a rare and life-threatening blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce haemoglobin and red blood cells. This meant she constantly needed blood transfusion for her survival. The only curative treatment option for her was a Bone Marrow Transplantation.

Initially, Parents approached Sapna Foundation at Vijayawada for the baby treatment. After reviewing the baby’s condition, the doctors at Sapna Foundation advised the parents to consult with Hemato Oncologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Department at Rela Hospital, Chennai. With rigorous monitoring and careful management by the team at Rela Hospital, she triumphed over the blood disorder by Bone marrow transplant and currently, she is free of blood transfusions.  Owing to the financial condition of the patient’s family, Rela Hospital along with crowdfunding agencies and various NGOs supported the family by raising funds for the Bone marrow transplant

“With bone marrow transplants, we can successfully cure immunodeficiency disorders, thalassemia and also improve the quality of life of such young toddlers who have a very long way to go in life,” said Dr Deenadayalan, Senior Consultant and Clinical Lead, Clinical Haemato Oncology, Rela Hospital

Baby’s Mother said “Once I came to know that my child is diagnosed with Thalassemia the only instant treatment was a blood transfusion and we started to do it immediately for 2 – 3 months at Sapna foundation but they suggested that one permanent solution for this is transplantation, so I came to Rela Hospital, now it’s been a month and my daughter is perfectly fine. I am very thankful to the Doctors and nurses who supported us and also the management for supporting us financially.

Dr Vimal Kumar, Consultant, Paediatric Haematology, Rela Hospital said, “The baby coordinate with the treatment very well and also luckily she got a matching donor her father itself where it was easy for us to proceed the treatments and perform the transplantation”
