To facilitate construction of two bridges between Vandalur and Guduvanchery and between Tambaram and Chengalpet., Southern Railway cancelled 42 suburban train services on Sunday. To avoid discomfort to daily officegoers, the works are undertaken during the weekend to minimise the impact.

However, this activity did throw the weekend plans of hundreds of people in southern suburbs between Tambaram and Chengalpet out of the window as there were no trains from Chengalpet towards Beach from 8.

10am to 7.25pm and in the reverse direction, from 7.25am to 6.35pm.

Due to the sky rocketing land prices in  Chennai city in the last decade, many working professionals have moved to locations like Vandalur, Guduvanchery and Kattankulathur where house rents are lower.

This includes a number of government employees who live in these areas.

For families, coming to Chennai is a weekend activity, especially shopping in T Nagar and a visit to the Marina or Besant Nagar beach.

Many also visit the shopping complexes in Pallavaram and Chromepet, but even that wasn’t possible on Sunday.
