54 Journalists Killed in 2024, a Third by Israeli Forces, Says Report
In 2024, a total of 54 journalists lost their lives while carrying out their work, with a third of the fatalities attributed to Israeli military actions, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The organization reported that 18 journalists were killed by Israeli forces—16 in Gaza and two in Lebanon. Palestine has emerged as the most dangerous region for journalists, with RSF highlighting that the number of journalist deaths in Gaza has been the highest globally over the past five years.
RSF also filed complaints with the International Criminal Court, accusing Israel of war crimes against journalists. Meanwhile, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reported 104 deaths in total, though discrepancies in methodology led to differing figures between the two organizations. In addition to the fatalities, RSF’s report noted an increase in imprisoned journalists, with 550 currently detained globally.
